Who doesn’t love riding a motorcycle on a hot summer’s day? The sun is out, the roads are dry, could the conditions be any more perfect?
Hang on, not so fast! With hotter temperatures and a hotter motorcycle as a result, there are a number of different challenges. Keep reading to find out our best tips for riding your motorcycle in hot weather.
Don’t ride during the hottest part of the day
There’s plenty of daylight in the Summer months, so there’s no need to be riding your motorcycle during the hottest part of the day. By heading out earlier or later in the day and avoiding that 12pm-3pm period, you can ensure that you’ll still be riding in great conditions without putting yourself at unnecessary risk.
Gear up and protect your body
It goes without saying that when you ride a motorbike you need to protect your body with the right gear. However on hot and sunny days, many riders opt to risk it and go for a ride in regular clothing.
But not only is exposed skin putting yourself at risk while riding, it’s also not an effective way to stay cool either! It might sound counterintuitive to wear more clothes while riding in the heat, but this is the way to go. Don’t forget to wear your XENA chest armour too, so that you’ll be better protected if you were to come off your bike.
Don’t forget to stay hydrated
We all sweat more in hotter weather which is why it’s so important to remember to stay hydrated when riding in hot weather. Electrolyte drinks are a great way to replace the salts you lose through sweating, so make sure you’ve got a drink on you when out on your bike. Drink a little bit often when riding and consider investing in a camelback which will allow you to stay hydrated while you ride!
Take regular breaks
Riding your motorbike in the heat can get tiring pretty quickly, so make sure you take plenty of breaks along your journey, not just when you need more fuel. If you’re travelling through scenic towns during your ride on a hot day, why not plan out your stops ahead of time to get the most out of your trip.
Sunscreen is essential
The last thing you want to do is ride a motorbike with sunburn. Sunburn not only harms your skin but it can also make you super tired which can lead to dangerous driving.
Do yourself a favour and be sure to slather on some sunscreen before you jump on your bike on a hot summer’s day!
Protect your eyes
Lastly, don’t forget to protect your eyes! If your motorbike helmet has a visor that’s great, make sure to use it. But if not, sunglasses or goggles are a must. This will help to protect your eyes from any dust or debris on the road, helping you to ride more safely.
